Columbia Publishing Course
Since graduating the Columbia Publishing Course (CPC) at Columbia University myself in 2016, I’ve returned each year to bring my industry knowledge and creative expertise to the newest class of students. Whether it’s sitting on panels, leading workshops, or offering career advice, I am an active participant in CPC’s summer programming and a year-round resource for publishing hopefuls.
Date: 2017 - present || Role: Faculty Advisor || Performed for: Columbia Publishing Course
Business Goal: Educate and inspire students in publishing industry, copywriting, and content strategy
Results: I’ve now held an annual faculty position for 8 years, consistently receiving stellar feedback on my guidance, mentorship, and copywriting and content strategy expertise. I’ve returned for every summer course with increased leadership responsibilities each year, and multiple students I’ve mentored have been hired to full-time positions in publishing within months of graduation
Project Tasks & Scope:
Leadership—I work alongside a co-mentor to lead groups of 10-12 students in week-long summer workshop; days often run 10-12 hours, and we offer everything from deadline management to professional development advice
Project planning—I set deadlines, establish daily schedules, and communicate via Slack and Google with my small group students, keeping them on track creatively and on schedule within the wider workshop
Idea generation guidance—I collaborate with students to ideate the strongest possible ideas at the start of their projects, and teach them some of the key critical thinking skills needed to successfully brainstorm
Copywriting mentorship—I primarily instruct students on writing compelling product copy, sales pitches, and key selling points, offering editorial guidance and suggested revisions as they develop their final projects
Presentation and public speaking—In addition to instructing my small group, I also sit on panels and present topics in front of the entire class of students (~110 people)
